Have you ever seen anything like this on your walk Have you ever seen anything like this on your walks on Sonoma Mountain? Here is an excellent image of some really cool looking Brachycybe producta, often called a feather millipede; it was recently captured by Lindsey Ladd-Mendonca. Unlike most millipedes, the genus Brachycybe are fungivores. While other millipedes feed on leaf litter or other plant matter, feather millipedes feed exclusively on fungi on decomposing wood. They are a critical part of forest decomposer ecosystems.

Brachycybe producta are a social species and a rare example of paternal caretakers. After the female lays eggs, the male coils his body around the mass and guards them until hatching, likely to protect the eggs from soil-dwelling fungi or predators such as ants.

Individuals grow up to 1 inch and range in color from orange to tan to pink. They spend a lot of time under rotting logs or stumps, but please don’t go rolling over stumps looking for them and disrupting their ecosystem! They are so cool to come across while exploring. Have any of you seen these lately?
