For that reason we must respect all of life. When we forget this big ongoing story we get into trouble…” Greg Sarris, How A Mountain Was Made

46th lion collared for Living with Lions study! T 46th lion collared for Living with Lions study!

The final days of 2023 brought a long-sought-after gift when Living with Lions lead investigator Quinton Martins placed a tracking collar on a 9–10-year-old female mountain lion in the Sonoma Mountain area. The lion, P46, had been on Martins' radar for several years.

Resident male lion P13 was also in the area at the time, which we hope means we'll see kittens in tow in the coming months. Tracking the movements of an older female cat, who has learned to navigate a landscape filled with risk, is incredibly important for the long-term study of North Bay lions. We are especially thankful to the property residents who lost two goats to this lion and provided the opportunity to capture her and have built a secure pen for the remaining sheep. Together, we can learn what it means to coexist with these magnificent lions.

"Upon arriving at the trap, it was clear this was a very relaxed cat. I had a good look at her and realized this was the Sonoma Mountain female I had been trying to capture for the past 6 years! It was an absolute stroke of luck to do this capture and get to see this beautiful 9-10 yr old lion lying calmly in a warm shed while we placed a collar on her." –Quinton Martins
